The same counts for Apple, you pay to have that logo on your device. And that's not because they're specifically a better quality than a brandless product. Clothing is a good example, a simple logo can drive the price of a t-shirt or even underwear up by a lot. Macbooks also have one of the best (if not the best) trackpads on any laptop.Īside from the design and build quality, you're also paying for the brand. Unlike regular laptops, ultrabooks and macbooks are much more light weight and made of metal. A macbook is more like an ultrabook, of which you'll notice the prices are much more similar.

Every PC I've ever had was virtually unusable after about 3 years.Ĭomparing a macbook to a generic laptop isn't a fair comparison. I had a MacBook Pro at home and an iMac at work, and both were recently replaced after over 5 years of heavy use. Additionally, the Apple store Genius bars are a valuable resource for help/troubleshooting and repairs - what do you do if you're having issues with your Dell? And because of the higher quality hardware and better software, MacBooks last longer. I know Microsoft just went to that model this year.

The software custom designed to work with the MacBooks is more stable, efficient, and updates to the OS have been free for a number of years ( and nominal cost for years before than). The screens are higher quality, the trackpads are better, the keyboards are better. There may be a small component of paying for Apple cache, but it's not very much when the actual benefits are factored in. They are higher quality machines in terms of hardware and software and service, and as a result they last longer.

This plus a far superior OS for developers means I probably won't go for a PC laptop next year. With Apple, they consider every part, it's designed from the ground up to be a balanced machine, not a selection of specs that looks impressive for tech heads. It generates too much noise, heat and the battery life makes it barely usable on the road. They don't have as good GPU's as top end PC laptops for the sole reason that it's actually an awful user experience when you have that in a small form factor. So on the whole, it's not a single thing that makes MacBooks worthy of the price discrepancy, it's the fact that every component is considered and designed into a complete package that complements everything else.
The battery life is appalling on the razer blade and the trackpad feels like shit with the worst plastics I've felt under my finger. The build quality while a beautiful looking machine, is a lot worse than the MacBooks, I can hear clicking when I hold it at certain angles because there is clearly a cable overlapping a fan, the thermal design is atrocious, I feel like I could start a fire if I start doing something intensive on the razer blade. Why did I go PC this year? Because on paper, the spec of an equivalent priced pc laptop like the razer blade completely blows apples hardware out the water, but I regret the decision immensely.
For the record I've had through work or bought myself, a MacBook Pro every year since 2011 and the this year bough a razer blade 14 instead, all top end models around the $2500 price range.
